He listed his mother Eliza Bickmore, Warden Street, Mimico as his next of kin. He was a labourer and had no previous military experience. He was 20 years and 4 months of age and stood 5 feet 7 inches tall. He had brown eyes, dark brown hair and a dark complexion. He had a scar from a hernia operation, and scars on below his left knee, on his right elbow and over his right eye. He was a member of the Church of England.
According to the 1921 Toronto City directory he was a machinist living on the north side of Warden Street, Mimico.
