According to his attestation papers dated April 19, 1917 at Toronto, Ernest Arthur William Stoot, Church Street (present day Royal York Road), Mimico was born on March 1, 1889 in Cambridge, England. He listed his mother Mrs. Emily Stoot, Church Street, Mimico as his next of kin. He listed his occupation as labourer and indicated that while he had no previous military experience he offered to join the 127th (CS) Battalion but was rejected due to bunions and varicose veins. He was 28 years and 1 month of age and stood 5 feet 10 1/2 inches tall. He had dark hazel eyes, dark brown hair and a medium complexion. He had scars on this right knee and on his left eyebrow. He was a member of the Church of England.
According to the 1914 Toronto City directory he listed his occupation as a kiln burner living with his father Wm H. Stoot, labourer on the east side of Church Street, Mimico.
