According to his attestation papers dated April 17, 1916, Herbert Yolland Turner was born in London, England on July 9, 1885. He listed his wife Mahalah Chaloner Turner, Mimico Beach as his next of kin. He listed his occupation as a clerk and indicated that he had had previous military experience with the 12th York Rangers. He was 30 years and 9 months of age and was 5 feet 9 1/2 inches tall. He had brown eyes and dark hair and complexion. He had scars on his right foot and left "inguinal" region. He was a Baptist.
In the 1921 Toronto City directory he was living on the east side of Burlington Street.
